Careers and Educational Guidance
Our Careers
Advisers can offer you impartial guidance before you come to
College, to help you in your choice of course or career. Once
you are enrolled on a course, they will help you to decide
on your next step, whether it is further study, training or
employment, and will help you plan and manage your future career.
You will also have
access to our careers libraries, containing a comprehensive
range of information on education and the job market, as
well as computer-aided guidance. If you would like to make
an appointment, phone 01924 789113/789301.
Counselling
The Counselling Service is provided by professionally qualified
Counsellors who offer support to all students. It offers a
safe place to talk in privacy about anything that is bothering
you. It can help you to let out feelings and to better to understand
your thoughts. It isn’t advice, and your counsellor will
not judge you but will help you to find your own solutions.
You can access the service by phone on 01924 789226 or email
counselling@wakefield.ac.uk. All enquires are treated in the
strictest confidence.
Welfare
The welfare
service is available to give you support, information and
advice on a range of welfare issues (accommodation, childcare,
benefits, sexual health etc.). An initial 30 minute appointment
is offered in the first instance where you can talk about
your difficulties and you and your advisor will come up with
an action plan. You can then go back as many times as you
need to, to review your progress and action plan as necessary.
You can make a welfare appointment by phoning 01924 789 226
Your Personal Tutor
Your personal tutor is central to the support and guidance
you will receive during your studies at College. They will
work with you to plan and review your personal, professional
and academic progress. Regular meetings will enable you and
your tutor to get to know each other. This will enhance the
support the College can offer you relating to personal, academic
and welfare issues to ensure your success.
Accommodation
We are able to provide you with information about accommodation
available to students in the Wakefield area. Call into College,
or phone 01924 789226, for our leaflet which gives details
of accommodation providers.
Additional Support
About 600 students each year benefit from the support of
the Additional Support Team. We have specialist Learning
Support Tutors who understand the needs of learners with
medical conditions, dyslexia, dyspraxia, dyscalculia, autistic
spectrum disorders, medical health issues, ADHD, mobility
difficulties, visual impairment, learning difficulties or
who are Deaf or hard of hearing or have English as a second
language. They can work with you to plan the extra help you
need and advise your tutors how to make adjustments for you.
Support can be in
and/or out of class - we aim to help you be as independent
as possible, but we want you to be supported properly so
that you succeed at College. We may decide that assistive
technology is all you need or you may need a support worker
helping you in class as well as during breaks. Support can
also be provided on work placement or College trips.
If you need any extra help in exams, like
extra time or a reader or scribe, it’s important that
you tell the Exams Office in good time so they can apply for
access arrangements for you. Phone 01924 789247.
The College
strongly urges you to disclose any disability or additional
support need so we can make any reasonable adjustments necessary.
We have a disability statement, which outlines the access and
support we are able to offer students.
If you haven’t
been in touch with the Additional Support Team, please contact
them before you enrol to ensure that support is in place at
the start of your course. Phone (T) 01924 789158, (V) 01924
789262 (F) 01924 789262.
Learning Centres
Each of our main
Campuses has a well-equipped Learning Centre, providing books,
journals, multi-media IT facilities and access to the internet.
Students can access specialist electronic resources subscribed
to by the College both on site and off. These resources range
from online journals and newspapers to films and census information.
Students can use our computers to
produce their assignments and these computers can be booked
up to a week in advance. Experienced staff are always on hand
to assist.
Restaurant Services
At each of our
main Campuses, a restaurant service offers a good selection
of hot and cold meals, sandwiches and refreshments.
Safeguarding
Children
Our Policy for Safeguarding Children and Vulnerable
Adults ensures that everyone attending activities in the College
does so in a safe and secure environment. It sets out the steps
we take to protect children and young people and the procedures
we would use to deal with any issues. The Policy is published
on the College website and the staff and student intranet. |
