In times of change
Speaking at Wakefield College’s Graduation
Ceremony in the City’s Cathedral last week, Terry
Hodgkinson, Chairman Designate of Yorkshire Forward,
the Regional Development Agency, told the 162 graduates
taking part, “We live in a world that is changing
at an alarming rate and at times of change, learners
inherit the earth.
“My vision for this Region is that in five years
time we will see great transformation and change in
our economic landscape. You have to start with something
in mind and then take that first step. If you think
you can, you can, if you think you cannot, you are probably
right. As individuals we have unlimited potential and
there is only one person who determines to what extent
we realise that potential, and that is ourselves,”
he said.
Heather MacDonald, College Principal, said that Further
and Higher Education continued to be challenging areas
within which it sometimes felt that the only constant
was change. “But at Wakefield College we are fortunate
to have a committed team of professional tutors, whose
enthusiasm continues to shine through.”
She said the College worked in partnership with many
organisations and education providers throughout the
District, the benefits of which were far reaching. “Together
we can open the door to opportunity and success for
greater numbers within our local community.”
In excess of 400 students graduated from Wakefield
College this year - the largest number ever - in subjects
including Education, Computing, Personnel, Building
Studies, Childhood Studies, Care, Sports Studies, Music,
Engineering, Business & Management, Travel &
Tourism, Catering, Multimedia, Theatre, Marketing, Art
& Design and Accounting, many of whom have gone
on to do top-up degrees at universities across the country.
