Italian Job for Rob
Wakefield College Football Development Centre
student Rob Carroll has just returned from representing
England under 19s in the European International youth
tournament. Rob, 18 from Wakefield helped the under
19’s to reach the final of the tournament held
in the Italian capital Rome, where they narrowly missed
out on the top prize to winners Romania.

Goalkeeper Rob, who is studying for a National Diploma
in Sport & Exercise Science at the Thorne’s
Park Campus, said, “It was an honour to represent
my country and a dream come true”. His love for
the game knows no bounds, he recently signed up for
a work experience placement in Eastern Europe with Bulgarian
giants CSKA Sofia.
The Wakefield College Football Development Centre is
part the English Colleges’ Football League (ECFL),
a National Youth League sanctioned by the Football Association
to provide competitive fixtures for young talented footballers
enrolled into College Football Development Centres throughout
the country. These college Football Development Centres
provide for students who wish to continue with full-time
education or vocational training whilst at the same
time improving their football skills.
Chris Coates, Co-ordinator of the Wakefield College
Football Development Centre was full of praise for Rob.
He said it “was a marvellous achievement for a
local lad from Wakefield”. It looks like Rob is
well on his way of realising a lifelong ambition of
becoming a professional footballer.
