Reaching for the stars at Wakefield
College
The largest ever rocket launched from UK was
on show at Wakefield College last week. The NOVA/Starchaser
4 rocket that stands at 43ft high on its launch pad,
was on display at the Colleges Thornes Park Campus.

Pictured are Wakefield College students Fenny
Huang, Man Li and Luke Griffiths. Also Penny Lockwood
14-19 project Coordinator and Mark Kebler from
team StarChaser. Also pictured are the group of
students and lecturers who took part in the day’s
activities. |
The Starchaser 4 was successfully launched from Morecambe
Bay in November 2001. The Starchaser team now hope to
further continue their long-term objective of creating
and leading the potentially enormous market in commercial
space travel.
Penny Lockwood, 14-19 Project co-ordinator for the
College, who organised the event said, “To have
the rocket visiting Wakefield College was an ideal opportunity
for the students to focus on Science and Engineering
based subjects through an exciting and unusual medium”.
Students had the opportunity to build their own miniature
rockets which they launched on the day. The Starchaser
team conducted a number of presentations throughout
the day about living in space and displayed the rocket
to help raise the profile of Science and Technology
based subjects. Students also got to quiz the experts
from team Starchaser, asking them questions about the
company, its aims and future plans.
Representatives from local universities were also at
hand to offer students advice and guidance about higher
levels of study.
