College helps in fight against Poverty
Staff and Students at Wakefield College were
hand in hand against the fight with poverty yesterday.
200 participants in white tops encircled the Wakefield
Campus by forming a human chain around the College as
part of the Make Poverty History campaign.
A white band is the is the symbol of the Make Poverty
History campaign to encourage the government to drop
the debt of developing countries, provide more and better
aid and improve trade justice.
The human band was the culmination of two weeks of
work for students in the Sixth Form Academy related
to third world debt relief. Students have been linking
the issues of poverty, aid and debt to their subject
areas. Business Studies students looked at Fair Trade,
Psychology students learnt about the link between poverty
and mental health whilst English Language students have
made links with local newspapers writing short press
releases discussing poverty.
College lecturer Kate Burland who organised the whole
event said “Students who participated have gained
a great deal of insight from the studies, many are eager
to follow these two weeks with events later in the year”.
She continued, “It was particularly encouraging
to gather both staff and students together in support
of a common cause, I hope the success of the day will
stimulate further events of this kind in future as they
help to foster a link between the students, the college
and world events”.
