Trying times for wannabe Rugby stars
A 25 strong group of students were out to impress
coaches yesterday, all vying for a place at the prestigious
Rugby League Development Centre at Wakefield College.
The 16 year olds who recently completed their GCSEs
at school were put through their paces by England under
18s Head Coach Paul Fletcher.

The Rugby League Development Centre is aimed at enhancing
the prospects of promising players throughout the Region.
It also aims to raise the standard of Rugby League by
providing players with an opportunity to progressively
improve their playing and coaching abilities whilst
studying on a full-time College course. All the students
have applied for courses at the College, including BTEC
National Diplomas in Sports Science, Public Services
and Sports Development.
It is an exciting time for prospective students joining
the Development Centre, as they will have opportunities
to work with highly qualified coaches. Wakefield College
this year has linked up with Leeds Metropolitan University.
As part of this link-up, students have gained the valuable
coaching experience of LMU Head Coach Paul Fletcher.
'Fletch' has a wealth of coaching experience, having
been head coach at Gateshead Rugby League Club as well
currently working with the Leeds Rhinos. Paul will be
working with College Head Coach Pete Riding, who is
also Player Performance Manager and Under 18s Head Coach
with the Wakefield Trinity Wildcats.
Head of the Rugby League Development Centre Alistair
Black highlighted the importance of academic ability
in successfully joining the Centre, “All of the
lads are expecting their results in the coming weeks
and it is ultimately that which will help us in deciding
who joins us”. He added, “We were very pleased
with the trials, the standard of players that we got
exceeded our own expectations, but what was even more
satisfying was the attitude and commitment of these
players. We look forward to seeing many of them come
September.”
