College reiterates ambitions for University Centre
Bosses at Wakefield College have reiterated their aim to establish a University Centre in Wakefield, in the wake of calls by Wakefield’s MP Mary Creagh for the City to have its own university.
Wakefield College, in partnership with Wakefield Metropolitan District Council, has had very positive discussions with the Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE) about this proposal. Support for a ‘University Centre Wakefield’, building on the strong foundation of higher education courses currently provided at Wakefield College, has been forthcoming from MPs, Yorkshire Forward, inward investors and other key stakeholders.
Heather MacDonald, Principal at Wakefield College, said, “We welcome John Denham’s new university challenge to open up towns and cities to new university provision, and we are confident that partners in Wakefield City are well-positioned to respond rapidly. Our position is enhanced given Wakefield College’s reputation for excellence in higher education provision and by our membership of the West Yorkshire Lifelong Learning Network.”
The College already offers foundation degrees and HNDs in a wide variety of subjects, which are accredited by the universities of Huddersfield, Bradford, Leeds Met and Sunderland.
