Throwing in the towel

Staff from Wakefield College’s Whitwood Campus have come to the rescue of an animal care sanctuary by donating 40 bin liners full of cloths, towels and pillows. The items had been in use in the Hair and Beauty salons at the Campus before they closed their doors for the last time last week.

Fluffy new ones have been bought for the opening of the new salons at the Skills Xchange, and staff wanted to make sure the old items were recycled and put to further good use. So when a plea for help by the Pugneys Swan and Wildlife Sanctuary was spotted in a local newspaper the College was delighted to be able to help.

Jenny Beecher, founder of the Sanctuary, was very glad of the donation and said, “The towels will help to keep our 54 hedgehogs warm, especially during this very cold snap.”

Hair and Beauty programme Manager Helen Savill said, “The Sanctuary is providing a brilliant service for the care and welfare of injured animals and the College was happy to help out. We didn’t want the towels and pillows to go to waste and are delighted that they are going to be put to such good use.”

The Stanley-based Sanctuary is home to hedgehogs, a grebe, doves, ducks, a barn owl, seagulls and meerkats. Having been set-up over twenty years ago, the sanctuary gained charity status in 2001. Its primary mission is to relieve the suffering and distress of all species of wildlife and also to educate the general public about animal welfare issues.
