Wakefield’s young sporting elite recognised

The cream of Wakefield College’s sporting talent was celebrated at the inaugural Sports Awards Presentation Evening held at the Cedar Court Hotel last week.

The event recognised the achievements of the College’s Athlete Development programme in developing stars of the future. Members of the Colleges men’s football, women’s football and rugby league teams were recognised by their peers and coaches for their achievements and performances. This year’s cohort saw eight students represent the North East, with a further two students who made England squads in their respective sporting disciplines.

Amongst the highlights was student Emma Watson who scooped the overall Sports Personality of the Year Award after having been selected for the England under 18’s football squad and also winning a gold medal at an International Kickboxing competition in the United States.

Guest speaker at this year’s event was Wakefield Wildcats Australian star Matt Petersen who was also joined by ex College lecturer James Ford who now plays for Castleford Tigers.

Wakefield College Athlete Development Programme co-ordinator Mark Helme said “This was the first time we have held such an event and I am delighted at how it went. The city of Wakefield has produced many sporting champions, who often go unnoticed; this event is just one which I hope will go a long way to highlight the talent that exists within Wakefield College.”
