Wakefield College’s Hospitality and Catering Department this week recognised the hard work and commitment of its students at an end of year ceremony where student Sam Ellis scooped the prestigious Chef of the Year Award.

Students Sam Ellis and Emma Bernard along with head of Hospitality and Catering Laurent Berges

Sam received a certificate from Head of Hospitality and Catering Laurent Berges, who also contacted famous Michelin Starred chef Michel Roux Jr, from the Gavroche Restaurant in London’s Mayfair, for support. The famous Chef sent a signed, personalised book with a hand written note.

Laurent Berges said: ”Sam has demonstrated excellent skills in professional cookery, and has an obvious flair that will lead to a successful career in the hospitality and catering industry.”

Sam has successfully completed an NVQ Level 2 Professional Cookery programme this year, alongside NVQ Level 2 in Food and Drink service, and a Pastry Certificate. He will return in September 2009 to start on the two years NVQ Level 3 in Professional Cookery programme that also includes a Pastry and Patisserie Diploma.

Another winner this year was Emma Bernard, who was recognised for her front of house and food and drink service. She was named Restaurant Supervisor of the Year after demonstrating excellent customer service, people and supervisory skills. Emma has also received a signed and personalised book from top chef Michel Roux Jr.

Wakefield College would like to publicly thank Michel Roux Jr for his kind support.
