Students showcasing Olympic spirit
The spirit of the upcoming London Olympic Games came to Wakefield this week when groups of students from Wakefield College took part in a sports day at the Thornes Park Athletics Track.

Students from the Lifeskills and Public Service Departments came together and took part in a whole host of traditional Olympic events including 100m, 200m, 400m, shot-putt and long jump, as well as some not so traditional activities, including the egg and spoon and three legged races.
The event, organised by the students, saw them grouped into five different teams, with each team led by Public Service students. Having to work together and lead small groups in activities also formed a key part of one of their study modules.
Course tutor Melanie Bawn said: “The core values of the upcoming Olympics, of Friendship, Respect and Equality, were really on show throughout the day. It was great to see students working and competing together. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed it and we are hoping this will be the first of many joint events over the coming months.”
