College celebrates historic a level success

“Absolutely stunning” is how Principal Sue Griffiths described Wakefield College’s record breaking A level results today after the class of 2009 achieved an overall pass rate of 97.8% - the highest in the College’s history and above the national average of 97.5%.

This year saw eighteen subjects (out of twenty two) achieve 100% pass rates, including: English Language, Chemistry, Biology, Government and Politics, Law, Psychology and ICT. A level Maths recorded a 100% pass rate for the fifth year running while Film Studies students delivered the maximum pass rate of 100% for the sixth year in a row. The Applied Double Award A level in Health and Social Care achieved a 100% pass rate in every year since it was introduced.

The average points per entry and the average points per pass also showed an increase on last year’s figures, while the percentage of A, B and C grades increased by a further 7%.

Duaa Adbulmushsen Ahmed picked up three A grades

Among this year’s best individual performances at A level, two students Maryam Mohammed and Le Mai Hoang both achieved four straight A grades and Duaa Adbulmushsen Ahmed and Dan Hu picked up three A grades.

At AS level, the overall pass rate rose by a further 2%.  Trung Pham Duc achieved four A grades whilst both Christian Emeka Chukwuemenka and Isaac James Ardle walked away with three A grades each.

Director of Academy Tony Rex said, “To achieve the highest ever overall pass rate in the history of the College and beat the National Average is a huge accolade for our students. Few similar institutions around the country will be celebrating results which are anywhere near this good. These results are a ringing endorsement of our Sixth Form College.”

Mr Rex also hit back at criticism of A levels; he said, “I do not believe that A levels are getting easier, and I think it is sad that some people feel compelled to devalue the achievements of our students, at the very time when we should be celebrating them! What is true is that the structure and assessment of A levels has changed in recent years. I believe this has made A levels accessible to a broader range of learners than in the past, and this is most welcome.'”

College Principal Sue Griffiths said, “We are extremely proud of our students’ record-breaking achievements. It is a testament to the hard work and dedication of our students along with the high quality teaching and learning environment that exists here at Wakefield College. I, along with all the senior team, would like to congratulate all our staff and students for their monumental success.”
