A star in the making
A Wakefield College lecturer has been short-listed for a prestigious teaching award after nomination by one of her students. Sam Broadbent, who teaches on the animal care course, has been nominated for a STAR Award for the support she gave to her class earlier this year after the tragic death of one of her students.

Animal care student Nicola Edwards, who nominated Sam for the award, said: “I nominated Sam because she is one of the sweetest, most understanding people I have ever met. She is an amazing listener and always has words of encouragement for every situation. We lost one of our class mates, Adam Wallace, to leukaemia in January this year and she gave amazing support to us all. She will always go out of her way to help and I think she deserves to win.”
Commenting on being short-listed, Sam said: “I was very excited when I received and read the email informing me about my nomination. I was touched that someone had taken the time out to nominate me for this award. It gave me a great sense of happiness and achievement.”
Director of Academy, Tony Rex, said: ”This is a richly deserved nomination for Sam. She can take great credit for the animal care programme being one of the most successful in the College, with outstanding achievements and levels of support for learners.”
The Star Awards were launched in 2003 by the Learning and Skills Improvement Service (LSIS) to recognise and reward ‘people who make a difference’ in Further Education.
