Competition winners unveil work

Learners from Freeston Business and Enterprise College were welcomed to Wakefield College’s skillsXchange on Tuesday 29th September by Principal Sue Griffiths.

The individual pics are of the students with their own work whilst the external group shot is: L to R: Callum Crouch, Luke Wilkinson, Jessica Firth, Lucy Hanson and Demo O’Grady (Freeston pupil).

The group of five students were the winners of an art competition for schools in the North East Learning Community. The brief for the learners was that their design was to be based on the new skillsXchange building in some way: the shape or design of the building, the vocational areas taught there or even the history of the Glasshoughton area.

Local artist, Harry Malkin, was enlisted to work on the project with the learners in school and helped to develop learner’s ideas and stimulate their creativity. All the winning students came up with mosaics inspired by the iconic structure and surrounding areas.

The winning pieces of work will now adorn the campus walls, with the overall winning piece, by student Demi O’Grady taking pride of place in the Campus conference room.
