College celebrates success of graduates

Strong winds and impending rain didn’t deter the spirits of the procession of students, staff, governors and VIPs, including the Mayor of Wakefield, Cllr Heather Hudson and her consort, Mr Peter Davis, as it made its way down Wood Street to the City’s Cathedral on Saturday, for Wakefield College’s annual Graduation Ceremony.

This year saw more than 130 students don cap and gown to receive their awards from guest speaker Sir Rodney Walker, who told those graduating, “In today’s world, there is an increasing need to possess, not just a good education, but an education for life. Education should prepare students for life, with an attitude that is caring, reasonable and tolerant.

“We live in a rapidly changing and uncertain world, and you need the ability and the confidence to participate in that world; Wakefield College has given that to you, take it with both hands,” he said.

In excess of 400 students completed a programme of HE from Wakefield College this year in subjects including Education, Computing, Personnel, Care, Sports Studies, Music, Engineering, Business & Management, Multimedia, Theatre, Marketing and Accounting, many of whom have gone on to do top-up degrees at universities across the country.
