A cold wintery Friday night did not deter Wakefield College students coming together at the Thornes Park Campus for its annual Awards Ceremony to celebrate their hard work, dedication and achievements.
Pete Bevils, former student and current Managing Director of Wakefield FC was this year’s guest speaker. Pete talked fondly about his time as a student at the College and how it equipped him with the skills to become a successful entrepreneur and businessman.
Representatives of the many local businesses and community organisations which had sponsored the Awards were in attendance on the night to congratulate the winners, as were Wakefield’s Deputy Mayor and Mayoress, Councillor Tony Wallis and Mrs Doreen Wallis.
Michaelmas Children’s Centre won the Spirit of the Community Award for the second year running for its excellent service to the community. Other highlights of the evening saw the Life Skills Students picking up the Chair of Governors’ Award for Outstanding Dedication by a Student Group for their performance of ‘A Blood Wedding’.
Student Maryam Argungu scooped both the A Level Student of the Year Award and the Director of Academy Award for Outstanding Achievement. It was Maryam’s determination to achieve which resulted in an outstanding four A grades at A Level in Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics and Physics earlier this year.
