National Diploma in Fine Art

Miniature versions of famous landmarks within Wakefield, which could be explored through a radio controlled camera, were on show at an art exhibition at Wakefield College’s Thornes Park Campus last week. Students from the College’s National Diploma in Fine Art course were tasked with building models of the City on a 1:50 scale based upon their own interpretations and ideas of how it could look in the future.

The main idea of the multidisciplinary media art project The Third Eye, which involves students from Wakefield, Holland and Germany, is to connect individuals, institutions and groups from different areas in Europe in an artistic, technological, educational and cultural exchange. The project forms part of the official celebrations of the Ruhr 2010 European City of Culture event.

Fine Art lecturer, Elouise Brear, said: “This has been a great project to be involved in as it unites students and artists all across Europe. All our learners thoroughly enjoyed being part of it as it allowed them to construct, express and exchange visions and ideas on how they live, how they want to live and how to design and plan their own urban landscapes.”

The Ruhr city of Essen will be hosting the final exhibition of the work next year at the UNESCO World Heritage site of Zollverein Coal Mine Industrial Complex.

Students from the College are actively seeking sponsorship to attend the Exhibition in 2010. Those requiring more information should contact Steve Rhodes, Director of Academy for Culture, Media and Sport, on 01924 789809 via email on s.rhodes@wakefield.ac.uk.
