The Sunday Times 100 Best Companies 2010
There was an air of jubilation amongst staff at Wakefield College when it was named one of the ‘Best Places to Work in the Public Sector’ at a glittering awards ceremony in London. The College was placed 1st in the Yorkshire and Humber region and 30th nationally in the prestigious list which also includes universities, councils, primary care trusts and other public bodies.
The survey, run by Best Companies in conjunction with The Sunday Times, showcases and ranks the best public sector employers across the country.
The College registered to take part in the scheme last year. Best Companies then conducted a confidential survey of staff attitudes to their work and their employer, which was completed by more than 300 employees.
The survey looked at a number of different factors which influence levels of job satisfaction. The results highlighted the scope for personal growth amongst workers as one of College’s strongest points. Personal growth considers whether people feel challenged by their job, whether their skills are being utilised and their perception of opportunities for advancement
The College’s Director of Human Resources, Karen Sykes, said: “I am delighted that Wakefield College has achieved a well earned place in this prestigious list. There are so many things that contribute to making the College such a terrific place to work and I am thrilled that this completely independent survey confirms that staff share my view of the College as a great place to work.”
College Principal, Sue Griffiths, added: “To be named as one of the country’s leading public sector employers is a fantastic accolade. There is huge job satisfaction associated with working here at the College. It’s literally about transforming lives through learning - and seeing our students excel in their chosen field is what inspires all our staff.
“It speaks volumes for Wakefield College that even during a challenging economic climate, when headlines are all about cuts in public spending, our employees have given us a huge thumbs up.”
Staff at Wakefield College enjoy a number of benefits which these include a final salary pension scheme, flexible working hours, generous holiday entitlement, childcare voucher scheme, professional development and discounted travel schemes.
The College employs more than 700 members of staff across three Campuses. To find out more about the employment opportunities available at Wakefield College, please visit our website www.wakefield.ac.uk/jobs.
