Presentation highlights dangers of gun and knife crime

Press Release Public Services

Wakefield College students were given a hard hitting message highlighting the dangers of gun and knife crime at a presentation last week. The event, run by West Yorkshire Police Fire Arms Support Unit, showcased the dangers of carrying weapons and the devastating effect it has on society.

PC Rory Romani, who is an authorised Fire Arms Officer, used fake and real examples of weapons to highlight the many difficulties officers face when confronted with weapon crimes.

PC Romani said: “The presentation is all about prevention through education. If we can stop just one person carrying a knife or gun, then we would see this project as a success.

“Although incidents involving guns and knives remain low in West Yorkshire, what we are trying to show people is just how officers respond to reports of people carrying weapons.”

Wyn Wilkinson, lecturer at Wakefield College, said, “This really was an extremely thought provoking session for our students. Violent crime involving dangerous weapons is a serious matter across the country so this was a great way to get the message across to the students.”
