Ofsted inspectors give College the thumbs-up

Wakefield College has received a ringing endorsement of the work it does following a recent visit by Ofsted inspectors. Staff and students were celebrating after getting a seal of approval from Inspectors who heaped praise on the College for its “outstanding approach to working with partners, safeguarding, and equality and diversity.”

The week-long inspection praised the College’s engagement with the wider community and rated as ‘outstanding’ its work with partners to develop the curriculum and respond to local needs, with Inspectors citing the 14-19 partnership work to reduce NEET levels as a prime example.

A level pass rates, which at 97.8% are above the national average, were described as ‘Outstanding’. Inspectors further complimented the College for its outstanding support for learners to improve their economic and social well-being and for the highly effective action it takes to prepare learners for employment and progression to higher education.

The College’s ICT provision was also assessed with the inspection team looking at both full and part-time provision at foundation, intermediate and advanced level. Overall, the area achieved a grade one, the highest possible, with inspectors describing outcomes for learners as ‘Outstanding’. 

The ten-strong inspection team, led by Tim Gardner, also praised the Principal and Board of Governors for their role in providing “very strong strategic leadership and direction which has ensured that the College is very well positioned to secure its future ambitions.”

The promotion of safeguarding was also rated ‘Outstanding’ as ‘all relevant statutory requirements are rigorously applied and closely monitored by appropriate departments.’ The promotion of equality and diversity was rated as ‘Outstanding’ too with the report stating: “The College is highly socially inclusive and makes all efforts to remove barriers to learning and contributes significantly to local regeneration.”

Commenting on the successful report, College Principal, Sue Griffiths, said: “We are absolutely delighted with the Ofsted report. This is a fantastic outcome for the College and reflects the hard work and commitment that we put into improving our students’ life chances.”

The College’s Chair of Governors, Cath Orange, added: “Governors are thrilled with the inspection outcomes released today. The recognition of the dedication, passion and excellence of staff is very heartening.”

The College was rated ‘Outstanding’ or ‘Good’ in 22 of the 23 areas it was assessed in and achieved an overall rating of ‘Good’.
