Gaskell’s Restaurant, Wakefield College’s training restaurant, has been nominated the best restaurant in Wakefield by the Civic Society.

Laurent Berges, Head of Hospitality, Catering, Travel and Tourism at Wakefield College says: “This is a tremendous honour. Myself and my team are really proud of this achievement. What it means, is that Wakefield College trains future chefs and front of house specialists in the best restaurant in Wakefield! I have seen training restaurants with accolades before, but never one that was voted Best Restaurant by a recognised Dining Club. That is what we do at the College! We do have other training environments such as Gaskell’s Travel’s, the Hair and Beauty Salon and the Theatre for example, which also provides excellent value for money to external visitors. Anybody can book a table with us, or make travel or holidays arrangements at the Travel Agency, or even have a makeover in the Salon.”

Members of the Civic Society dining club sampled a different restaurant each month from February to December 2010 and chose the winning restaurant by rating each establishment they ate at.

Society President, Kevin Trickett, said “At the beginning of last year, we decided to set up our Dining Club so that members could meet informally and try out the many different restaurants that Wakefield now has. This helps the Society to establish a relationship with local businesses and also helps us to better understand the choice of eating place available in and around the city and the quality of food and service people can expect when dining out here, an important consideration given that many people will be coming to Wakefield to visit the Hepworth”.

“By asking our Dining Club members to score their experience of each restaurant they have tried, we are building up a good picture of the best places to eat in Wakefield. In 2010, we visited 11 different establishments in and around the city centre.

“The two restaurants we are recognising at our AGM scored the highest marks based on what our members experienced on the evening we visited them and I congratulate the Castle and Gaskell’s for being the first winners of our Restaurant of the Year award”.
