Two beauty therapy students from Wakefield College’s Castleford Campus have won medals at the WorldSkills finals – the UK’s biggest careers and skills showcase. The three day event, held at the Birmingham NEC, attracted more than 500 competitors who took part in an array of disciplines ranging from aeronautical engineering to floristry.

Nicola West, 30, picked up a bronze medal in the advanced nail enhancements category whilst 38 year old Samantha Hancott achieved a highly commended award in advanced nail art. The duo beat off tough competition from across the country to reach the final, having battled through local and regional heats.

Hair and Beauty Therapy Programme Area Manager, Helen Savill, said: “We are delighted with the success of both Nicola and Sam. It was a monumental effort even to reach the national finals as the heats were so tough. But both of them have done brilliantly and thoroughly deserve their medals. I along with all the staff and students at Wakefield College are hugely proud of them and all the students who entered this competition.”

Theo Paphitis, Patron of the Skills Show, added: "Congratulations to the winners of this year's WorldSkills UK National Competition Finals. There has been some fantastic work produced and I hope this will show everyone how apprenticeships and vocational training can lead to worthwhile and valuable careers."
