Press Release Sport Academy of Sporting Excellence

Mark Helme

Wakefield College Athlete Development Programme (ADP) coordinator, Mark Helme, has landed an exciting new part-time role with the Football Association that wills see him help develop and nurture football stars of the future.

Mark Helme, who will continue to work at the College’s Thornes Park Campus as the Athlete Development Programme coordinator, has begun his new part-time role as Performance Scientist for England Colleges Football Association (ECFA). As part of the new role, Mark has been tasked with introducing sports science techniques to the players which he hopes will give them a competitive edge over their opponents.

Commenting on his new role, Mark commented: “As Performance Scientist for the ECFA, I will play a central role in helping the players produce optimal performances against international opposition. Working across the three international teams run by the ECFA, I will be involved in contributing to the design of performance training camps to ensure the players are in the best physical state. I will also collect performance data about each of the players to identify how well they are coping with the demands of international football as well as profiling the players to benchmark for future squads.”

In-between each of the fixtures and training camps, Mark will be in regular contact with all players monitoring dietary intake and recovery levels, as well as guiding the players towards an individualised strength and conditioning program.

One of Mark’s first tasks over the coming weeks will be to accompany the squad to tours of Italy and Estonia where he hopes to utilise his experience and skills to put strategies in place to help the players perform at their best.

Mark Helme, along with other members of Wakefield College’s Athlete Development Program (ADP) are holding open trials at the College’s Thornes Park Campus on Monday 8th and Tuesday 9th of April. Year 11 students from local schools are being invited in to taste what life as a sports student at Wakefield College is really like. Students interested in Men’s football, ladies football and men’s rugby league are being asked to come forward.

Mark said: “Wakefield College’s ADP has a rich history of producing national team champions and individual sports stars that have gone onto play at the highest levels in a range of sports. We want to use this opportunity to find the stars of the future so I would encourage as many studnets as possible to sign-up.” For more info, please contact Mark on 01924 789752.
