Press Release, Visiting Professionals, Government & Politics, Sixth Form, A Levels

Young people from across the Wakefield District came face to face with their local politicians during a Hustings event at Wakefield College on last week. Representatives from the district’s main political parties took questions on a range of domestic and national topics including the NHS, education, public sector spending, law and order and international policies.

Mary Creagh (Labour) was be joined by Antony Calvert from the Conservatives, Rebecca Taylor from the Liberal Democrats, Alan Hazelhurst from UKIP and Becca Thackray from the Green Party. The audience was made up of staff and students from Wakefield College and pupils from other local schools.

The College’s Government and Politics lecturer, David Green, who chaired the event, said: “Disillusionment with politics is a major issue especially amongst young people. I’m hopeful that this event will bring the students closer to the political world as it give them a unique opportunity to engage with the parliamentary candidates and ask about issues that are important to them.”
