Pupils celebrating their graduation

Last week saw the 3rd annual Graduation ceremony for Wakefield’s Children’s University with over 130 children graduating. The programme is led by Wakefield College with Principal and Children’s University Chancellor, Sam Wright, presenting the children with their awards in the ceremony.

Schools attending were: St Michaels Academy; Normanton All Saints Infant School; Wakefield Girls High Junior School; Wheldon Infant School, Glasshoughton Infant Academy; South Hiendley Junior & Infant School; St Helens CE Primary School, Hemsworth; Ryhill Junior & Infant School and Hemsworth Academy.

Guest speaker was BBC Look North host Amy Garcia, who spoke of her interest in the initiative and also interviewed a number of graduates on stage who explained how CU has helped them experience new things and above all have fun!

CU is a national organisation where children collect learning hours for out of school activities in their CU Passport and attend the graduation ceremony after reaching significant thresholds. Activities include after school clubs and validated learning activities at over 100 places across the Wakefield District. Children can also access national and international learning destinations.

Wakefield College Partnerships Manager James Pennington said: “The Wakefield CU continues to go from strength to strength. This year’s graduation was a fantastic event and it was marvellous to see so many children being rewarded for learning in their own time.

The Children’s University is a significant part of our School Liaison activity and enables us to work with children and communities to provide exciting and engaging learning opportunities and raise the aspirations of youngsters across the district.”
