STEMPLUS master classes at Wakefield College

Wakefield College recently welcomed over 170 students in Year 8 and 9 at local schools to take part in STEMPLUS master classes. These enthusiastic learners had the opportunity to try out activities in a range of subject areas across college, particularly focusing on science, games development, and computing.

STEMPLUS master classes are designed to open the doors to subject areas that young learners may not have the chance to trial in their normal classroom setting at school. It gives the students an opportunity to build on existing knowledge in subject areas that interest them, and highlights the first taste of college life. Expert lecturers, with a wealth of experience in their respective subject area, deliver the master classes in an industry setting, using top of the range facilities and suites that are situated at the Wakefield campus.

Students that visited the Wakefield campus took part in many engaging classes including science experiments in biology and chemistry, to insightful tutorials of the 3SD Max software in games development. The sessions are designed to provide a fun and challenging first look at courses that are available at Wakefield College while also providing an insight into related industries.

Wakefield College Partnership Manager James Pennington said: “I am delighted at the number of young people who gave up a day or two of their school holidays to participate in our STEMplus master classes. We have focused on STEM and Digital subjects which have been identified as growth areas for the Wakefield district in the next few years. I am keen for the College to play its part in providing young people with the skills to be successful in these industries.”

Physics master class participant, Nathan Farrell, said: “We’ve been learning about the frequency of waves in the physics this morning which is much harder than anything we’ve done before. I’ve always had an interest in science and I’m enjoying the atmosphere here at Wakefield College”
