Wakefield Colleges’ Lee Kershaw has signed his first professional Rugby League contract with Wakefield Trinity’s first team.

Kershaw, who is a product of the club’s academy has agreed terms to a two-year professional deal, after his impressive performances for the youth teams.

The Bradford-born winger has been an outstanding member of the club’s under-19s team and academy team at Wakefield College this season and even caught the eye of first team Head Coach Chris Chester.

Chester named Kershaw in his squad for the pre-season match against Dewsbury Rams in which the youngster had an exceptional game.

Lee Kershaw said, “I am thrilled to have signed my first professional contract, I never expected this to happen this season so it was quite a shock when I spoke to Chris. At the moment I am completing my studies at Wakefield College whilst playing for the u19s and I am looking forward to start training with the first team.”

Head Coach, Chris Chester spoke of the deal saying, “Lee is an outstanding prospect and an exceptional young local talent. I was very impressed with his performances with the u19s and when he featured in our friendly against Dewsbury at the start of pre-season. I look forward to working with him in the future and watch how he progresses.”

Lee is the second player this year that coach Mark Applegarth has progressed to a professional contract and the third in two years.

Wakefield Colleges’ Head of Competitive Sports Ben Severn says “It’s fantastic to see another product of the Colleges’ system make the grade. Were all delighted for Lee at the College and it’s testament to his hard work, dedication and attitude to his studies and training. It shows that the Academy of Sporting Excellence here at Wakefield College is one of the best in the country and certainly in the area for taking students from the college, developing them and turning them into professional athletes.”

Wakefield College are still taking applications for next year’s Rugby League Development Programme and are excited to announce that they will be running a women’s team for the first time next season. As well as rugby league the College offer a Football Development Programme (boys & girls) and an Athlete Development Programme for athletes of other sports such as athletics, golf, boxing and much more.
