Three Wakefield College Hair & Beauty students from the Castleford Campus are celebrating after securing the top spots in two prestigious national competitions - UK World Skills Awards and the National Make-Up Awards 2017. WorldSkills UK, and National Make-Up Awards bring together apprentices and young people from across the country to compete against each other to be judged the best in their chosen discipline.

Kirsty Neden, competing in the Nail Technology competition, came first beating off stiff opposition with a French manicure and freestyle nail art. Judges praised Kirsty for the precision of work and attention to detail she demonstrated. College lecturer, Leslie O’Loughlin, said; “I am so proud of Kirsty, she has worked so hard in her free time practising at every given opportunity. She thoroughly deserves this win and she is an asset to Wakefield College.” Leanne Charlston, competing in the Media Make-Up category, scooped the top prize after impressing judges with her creation of Eragon, a mythical blue dragon. The competition focuses on all the essential requirements for a successful career in media make-up.

Competitors are expected to demonstrate their skills as make-up artists within dynamic media environments. College lecturer, Abbie McDonald said; “Leanne worked exceptionally hard to apply a bald cap, two prosthetic pieces as well as full body art. Leanne also made her own prosthetic pieces going above and beyond the work required within the course. Her body paint was beautifully detailed and her adornments were all homemade.

Leanne worked very hard in her free time and attended extra sessions to prepare for the competition, we are all extremely proud of her.” Benji Kusita won 2nd place in the Film and Fantasy category and 3rd place in the TV Simulation category at the National Make-Up Awards that was held at Birmingham NEC.

The competitions are aimed to inspire next generations to be ambitious in their pursuit for excellence, while equipping them with life-long, world-class skills. Wakefield College offer many full and part-time hair and beauty courses at a variety of levels. For more information, please call course information on 01924 789111.
