Adam in training for his cycling challenge.

A Wakefield College staff member will be cycling 500 miles in 5 days during February 2018, and aiming to raise £5,000 for the YoungMinds charity.

Adam Sweeney will clock up the miles on a stationary bike outside the Wakefield Trinity retail shop in the Ridings Shopping Centre, from 19th to the 23rd February. He is hoping to reach his target through donations on Just Giving as well as been sponsored by Wakefield Trinity.

Adam, a Student Data and Timetabling Officer, says, “I have zero experience in cycling so this is a whole new thing for me but for such a worthy cause. I have set the bar high with a £5,000 target but ALL donations are truly appreciated!”

Statistics show that around 850,000 children and young people in the UK are affected by mental health and emotional problems

  • That’s three children in every classroom
  • One in five young adults show signs of an eating disorder
  • One in 12 deliberately harm themselves – 25,000 of them are hospitalised each year because of this
  • Nearly 80,000 children and young people suffer from severe depression

With good mental health, children and young people do better in every way. They are happier in their families, do better at school, and enjoy friendships and new experiences.

YoungMinds is a small organisation trying to make a big difference and with your support they can continue empowering children and young people, supporting parents and carers, training professionals, making mental health information accessible, changing policy and challenging stigma.

Your generous donations will help to continue their vital work, improving the emotional wellbeing and mental health of children and young people. They try to achieve their aims by providing expert knowledge through their free and confidential Parents Helpline, participation with young people, professional training, work in schools and ensuring mental health is placed firmly on the public and political agenda.

YoungMinds also campaign vigorously in the hope that mental health will one day have parity with physical health, as the stigma associated with talking about how we feel is still widespread throughout society today. Without your help they would not be able to continue to provide support for families, improving the lives of children and young people affected by mental health problems across the UK.
