Wakefield College and JCT600 are excited to be setting up a new partnership, which allows students the chance to undertake work placements.

Four students will have the chance at a work placement between March and April this year, which will not only improve their employability skills but also provide hands-on experience of working in industry.

The placements could lead to jobs or apprenticeships, and the chance for further on-the-job training with JCT600.

Adam Nichols, Group Recruitment Manager at JCT600 said, “We set up this programme to reach students who are normally overlooked. Previously as a company we have focused on apprenticeships, which is still a fantastic opportunity, but we missed out those young people who are already in college, actively learning valuable skills and want to get into the industry.

There’s a shortage of technicians in the industry and now we’re able to give students an opportunity to get into dealerships, when they wouldn’t normally look at a business of our size.

We’re working with 10 colleges in total, and are hoping to take on 110 students for work experience with the view to employ some once they’re qualified. Once employed they could take part in fast-track training to become accredited technicians within 6 months. We’re the only company in Yorkshire offering this opportunity.

Our goal is to expand this opportunity out to other areas of the company, including sales, finance and HR – there are over 96 roles at JCT600 so this could be massive for us and the students.”

Adam, and other JCT600 representatives, visited the College during the first teaching week of 2018 to launch the new partnership with students, talking them through the history of the company and what it’s like to work for them.

The placements are open across both the Wakefield and Castleford JCT600 sites in various roles.

Tony Jackson, Work Placements at Wakefield College added, “The opportunity for Wakefield College and JCT600 to create a partnership academy is testament to the importance of further education and employers working side by side to create sustainable industries and raise career aspirations for our students.

JCT600 have definitely brought something exciting to the table for our students to work towards through the offer of work placement and employment with enhanced post-qualification training.

It is partnerships like this that make Wakefield College, Motor Vehicle and Engineering Departments the preferred choice for many school leavers looking at highly skilled training opportunities.”
