Rugby Development Programme Academy of Sporting Excellence Sporting Success

Stephen Gibbs has signed for Halifax RLFC

Wakefield College Rugby Development Programme (RDP) player Stephen Gibbs has signed a professional contract with Halifax RLFC.

Gibbs is another player in the RDP that has gone on to securing playing top level rugby after his time at Wakefield College. Gibbs entered College unattached to a team but a fantastic attitude, personality and high class training programme has squeezed the potential out of him allowing him to follow his dreams.

Gibbs will follow Kian Morgan, another Wakefield College player who earlier on in the year made the leap signing a professional contract. On being signed, Gibbs said, “The best part about the rugby league development program was that it was a pathway into a professional sporting environment. After being overlooked at amateur level, it put me on a level playing field with the academy players through quality coaching, training and the chance to show my potential at a high level. I am extremely happy to be part of the Halifax RLFC and look forward to seeing what the future holds, but I owe a lot to both Wakefield Trinity and College for the position I am currently in.”

Head of Competitive Sport, Ben Severn says “We are all really proud of Stephen and the opportunity couldn’t have come to a nicer, hardworking lad. I have every confidence that he will be a success and do himself and the College proud. We also thank  College rugby coach Mark Applegarth too, who has guided Stephen through his time at College along with many other athletes as more and more students are signing pro contracts as a result of the RDP.”
