Tis Pity She’s a Whore - Multimedia: Rolling in the Deep

Tuesday, 13 December, 2011

First published in 1633 during the reign of Charles I, John Ford’s incestuous love story is one of the most powerful and controversial plays ever written. It is a classic example of the way in which the tragic plays of this time questioned morality, saw love as a violent entity and highlighted corruption in the halls of power... not in fact, a million miles away from what is potent in today’s society.

The Gut Girls

Saturday, 18 June, 2011

Welcome to our production of The Gut Girls by Sarah Daniels. On one hand the play is simply a story about progress and change from the Victorian period to the Edwardian period and its impact on the working classes. On the other hand it is a story of five feisty women working in the stinking pit that is the gutting sheds. Up to their elbows in entrails and trotters for thirteen hours a day, the working conditions are merciless. Despite what the foreman thinks they are the rulers of this bloody realm and masters of their own destinies. The “gut girls” are raucous, boisterous, have mouths like sailors and are as strong as the pigs they gut, yet they are financially independent to a degree rare for young working-class women in Edwardian England. With a reputation for hard drinking and unruliness, the women are viewed as being no better than whores. Enter Lady Helena, an aristocrat on a mission to teach the gut girls some manners and make them acceptable enough to be employed as domestics. The result is a total yielding of their independence, spirit and way of life.

One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest

Friday, 17 June, 2011

Randle Patrick McMurphy arrives at an Oregon mental asylum and is met by an array of characters that have become institutionalised by the system in which they have found themselves. It doesn’t take long for the charismatic and mutinous crook to sway the others into breaking the rules and challenge the dictatorship of Nurse Ratched. For a time he overturns the senseless and dehumanising routines of the ward. Chaos ensues with grim consequences as McMurphy ends up not quite as sane as when he entered. This stage version by Dale Wasserman is based on the tragicomic novel by Ken Kesey. It later became a hugely successful film in 1975 starring Jack Nicholson as the irrepressible McMurphy.

A Chorus Line

Thursday, 16 June, 2011

A Chorus Line is a musical about musicals, set on the bare stage of a Broadway Theatre it is a dramatisation of the competitive and volatile nature of being a performer. We are introduced to a number of hopefuls at an audition who are put through their paces both personally and professionally; the auditioner (Zach) forces the chorus line to expose their inner most anxieties in an almost sadistic bid to ensure that he employs a cast who truly have the burning desire to perform. It is funny, sad, occasionally cruel, but always heart-warming and highlights beautifully the psychology of performers and the competitive nature of show business.
