Wakefield College celebrates A Level success

A Level students from Wakefield College’s Sixth Form have once again come up trumps after the class of 2013 achieved another strong set of results. Figures revealed last night showed the overall pass rate exceeding 95% for the tenth year in succession. In addition to the A level success an impressive 13 BTEC Extended Diploma students achieved three distinction stars – the highest results possible.

Children from across the Wakefield District, some as young as five, will don caps and gowns this week as they take part in the first ever Wakefield Children’s University (CU) Graduation Ceremony on Wednesday 26 June in the grand surroundings of Wakefield Theatre Royal.

Students from Wakefield College are promising a spectacular festival of music, dance and theatre to celebrate the opening of the new refurbished Mechanics’ Theatre on Wood Street, Wakefield as it opens its’ doors to the public next week following a £1 million refurbishment.

Engineering students at Wakefield College’s Castleford Campus spent time in the fast lane recently when former world land speed record holder, Richard Noble OBE, came in to talk to them about careers in the Engineering Industry and his involvement in the latest project that will see the British Bloodhound SCC team aim to take the land speed record to over 1,000 mph.

Students from Wakefield College have been getting fighting fit thanks to a week long programme of health related activities and fairs. The first ever Health Week took place across all three of the College’s campuses and saw hundreds of students taking part.

Comic Relief fun

Staff and students did something funny for money at Wakefield College recently and helped raise over £500 for Comic Relief. Staff from all campuses wore something red to celebrate the annual BBC fundraiser whilst Public Services students organised a ‘Harlem Shake’ dance at the Thornes Park Campus.

National Apprenticeships Week

The Shadow Home Secretary and local MP, Yvette Cooper visited the Castleford Campus recently as part of National Apprenticeships Week. Yvette was welcomed to the College by Assistant Principal, Jo Simister and Programme Area Manager, Mark Butcher.

Children’s University pop-up shop proves a winner

Wakefield Children’s University took over a unit at the Ridings Shopping Centre last week and welcomed over 100 visitors. The Children’s University pop-up shop saw pupils take part in a number of interactive activities including darts, golf, healthy food demos and karate.
