Start building the technical skills and knowledge you need to progress in art and design. Explore a range of materials and media and learn how to develop your own ideas and visual language. Project-related trips locally and to London are part of the course.
What you will study
You will take core units in 2D and 3D Communication, Vocational Context, Explore and Develop Ideas and Produce Outcome.
You will take two specialist units in Working to Textile Briefs and Working to 3D Design Briefs.
You will also work towards a Functional Skills qualification in ICT.
Your Course Structure
Classroom: 20%; Practical: 80%
How you will learn
The course will be delivered through a series of assignments and workshops. You will have the opportunity to work in our specialist studios and use a variety of 2D and 3D media.
How you will be assessed
You will be continually assessed throughout the programme by your tutors and by an external moderator. Each unit and your overall performance on the programme will be graded as a Pass, Merit or Distinction.
Entry Requirements
Students will normally need to have at least one of the following:-
* BTEC Introductory Diploma
* BTEC GNVQ Foundation Certificate (Merit profile) in a related subject
* Equivalent of four GCSEs at grade A* - D (including English and preferably an Art, Media or Design-related subject), plus Level 1 numeracy. If you do not have the relevant numeracy qualification, we can assess your current level.
* Related work experience
* Other related level 1 or 2 qualifications
* Portfolio interview
Attendance
One year.
Course Costs (subject to change)
Tuition and certification are free if you are aged 16-18 years old. Related additional costs may include materials, equipment, visits, residentials etc which are payable by all students.
Any student entered/registered with an Awarding Body who has been given free entry and then withdraws or is withdrawn by a tutor will incur the certification fee associated with the course. Any re-sit examination will incur a cost.

Further study
Level 3 courses in Art & Design, Computer Games Design, Photography, Graphic Design or Media offered by Wakefield College. Mature students may progress to the Foundation Diploma in Art and Design.
Career opportunities
Employment in the commercial sector at junior level in such areas as web design, graphic design or interior design.
