This course provides introductory knowledge, understanding and technical skills for learners wishing to study Computer Games Design, Photography, Animation, Web Design, Television, Journalism and Film. It combines the BTEC Level 2 Diploma in Creative Media Production with a BTEC Level 1 Award to provide an ideal course for those with an interest in traditional or new media.
What you will study
You will gain a solid foundation in media principles and technologies through the study of units which may include:
* Research for Creative Media Production
* Media Audiences
* Photography Techniques
* Communication Techniques for Creative Media Production
* The Creative Media Sector
* Digital Graphics for Print-Based Media
* Writing for the Creative Media
* Computer Games Testing
Your Course Structure
Classroom: 20%; Practical: 80%
How you will learn
Through workshop-style sessions that encourage hands-on experience of industry standard software, equipment and techniques. All students will also work towards a BTEC Level 1 Award in Video.
Trips and visits are also an important element of this course. International trips may include Gamescom in Cologne, Germany, and a four day residential to Disneyland Resort, Paris, as well as day trips to EuroGamer Expo in London, Royal Armouries in Leeds, and the National Media Museum in Bradford.
How you will be assessed
You will participate in your own continuous assessment through practical projects. Your tutor will provide regular feedback and maintain a record of assessment which may be externally verified.
Entry Requirements
At least one of the following:-
* BTEC Introductory Diploma
* BTEC GNVQ Foundation Certificate (Merit profile) in a related subject
* Four GCSEs at grade A* - D including English and preferably an art, IT, media or design-related subject, or equivalent, plus Level 1 numeracy. If you do not have the relevant numeracy qualification, we can assess your current level.
* Related work experience
* Other related Level 1 or 2 qualifications
* Portfolio interview
Attendance
One year full-time, Monday to Friday, for approximately 16 hours per week, including tutorial time, plus a similar amount of time for private study. Extra help with your English/Maths can be arranged.
Course Costs (subject to change)
Tuition and certification are free if you are aged 16-18 years old. Related additional costs may include materials, equipment, visits, residentials etc which are payable by all students.
Any student entered/registered with an Awarding Body who has been given free entry and then withdraws or is withdrawn by a tutor will incur the certification fee associated with the course. Any re-sit examination will incur a cost.

Further study
Students who achieve an overall Merit may progress to the Level 3 Computer Games Design course, Level 3 Photography, or Level 3 Graphics at Wakefield College.
Career opportunities
Further study at Level 3 could lead to employment or higher education in areas such as television, journalism, film, computer games design, computer games development, animation, web design or photography.
