The ERASMUS+ Experience

Enriching our students’ learning

Wakefield College is committed to working in partnership with schools, employers and learning-providers to enrich our students’ learning, attainment, achievement and progression opportunities. Part of that vision is supported by projects with the European Union’s Erasmus+ Programme. Erasmus+ is the EU Programme in the fields of education, training, youth and sport for the period 2014-2020. The programme allows the College to work with European partners to improve skills and employability, raise aspirations, and enhance the College’s international dimension.

Since 1997, more than 500 students have been placed with organisations across nine countries with the aim of gaining genuine vocational work experience in an international setting. The programme funds preparation, travel and subsistence for students to spend two or three weeks on work-placement in a setting related to their curriculum area.

The project operates within Animal Care, Hospitality & Catering, Sport, Public Services, Travel & Tourism and Childcare and has a wide variety of host partners currently including a college in Sweden, the Hilton in Malta, a ski-tour operator and hotel group in Italy, a marine research institute in Spain and an animal sanctuary in the Netherlands that can offer both practical, relevant work experience and the many benefits that cultural and linguistic exchange brings.

Participating in a competitive recruitment programme and benefiting from this once in a lifetime opportunity not only increases ability and confidence, but can provide a positive focus for an engaging and interesting interview with potential employers or universities.

In recognition of the competences gained in a busy working environment, successful students will be awarded a Europass document as evidence of their achievement.

The project encourages immersion in the culture and language of the hosting country in order to give participants the confidence and inspiration to seek employment in any country they choose.

Students thoroughly enjoy their placements and return to College feeling more independent and confident; they feel that having the Europass Mobility Document will give them a competitive edge when they apply to further their education or to enter employment.

ERASMUS+ Programme Partners

The College works with various European partners to improve skills and employability, raise aspirations, and enhance the College’s international dimension.

What a brilliant experience! After undergoing this project, I have absolutely no idea why a person would not apply for it. It gives a person the chance: to gain some work experience in a great field of work, meet new people, learn new languages and try different food. I’ve met a lot of people who I will plan on seeing again in the future, and it has been a great first step into conservation work, of which I plan to undertake next year.
