The Global Dimension at Wakefield College

Dawn Carter

Wakefield College recognises the importance of providing opportunities for our students to develop the many skills needed to work within the global economy. These include:

  • The ability to work comfortably in multinational teams
  • Knowledge of different business methods, legislation and ways of working
  • Understanding and appreciating different cultures
  • Feeling confident when working in and with other countries

The International Centre actively contributes to this process by applying for funding to support projects, work placements and exchanges. Each year we provide placements generously funded by the Leonardo da Vinci Mobility programme for more than 80 students to France, Spain, Malta, Sweden, Finland, Greece, Germany, Italy, Turkey and Bulgaria. Most placements are organised on a reciprocal basis and we welcome students from our partner organisations to the College, providing placements, accommodation and a cultural programme. These students always take part in some classes and give an introduction to their own country and culture.

Examples of recent placements are:

  • Animal care students taking part in turtle conservation in Greece and dolphins in Tenerife
  • Sports science students working in Sweden
  • Catering students in five star hotels in France, Malta and Turkey
  • Health and Social care students helping to rebuild a nursery school in Germany
  • Sports student working with deprived children in Naples, Italy
  • Students with learning difficulties working in tourist and catering organisations in Sweden
