“One of the main reasons I came to the College was that it recently had an inspection with an excellent Ofsted result and good previous Ofsted results.”

The Academy has been in its present form since August 2006. Building on the success of the College’s Sixth Form Academy, we are developing a distinctive Sixth Form College identity for students on advanced programmes, along with distinctive FE provision for young people on Foundation and Intermediate programmes. In doing so we aim to meet the needs of around 1,500 full-time students. The Academy’s provision includes Business and ICT, Care and Early Years, Catering and Hospitality, Humanities and English, Science and Mathematics and Travel and Tourism.
The Business and ICT programme area has been recognised as a Centre of Vocational Excellence in Computer Technology, and included in an Ofsted Good Practice report in ICT. More than 350 students started full-time programmes in 2009-10. Provision in business includes First and National Diplomas in Business as well as AS and A level accounting and business studies. There are a wide range of courses in ICT from foundation to advanced level, including the Diploma in Digital Applications, First and National Diplomas for IT Practitioners and the Applied AS/A level in ICT. Success rates in ICT are high. The area has recruited its first students onto the new 14-19 diplomas in ICT in September 2009.
The provision in Care and Early Years is well established with over 450 students starting full-time courses in 2009/10. The full-time childcare courses include CACHE Foundation Certificate, Certificate and Diploma in Early Years and Education, which are now delivered at the College’s new Skills Xchange. BTEC Introductory and First Diplomas in Health & Social Care, the AS/A level Double Award in Health and Social Care and the National Diploma in Early Years are offered on a full time basis for young people at the Wakefield Campus. There is a growing HE provision in Early Years. Success rates in 2008/09 were high on the majority of courses, with several having 100% pass rates.
The Academy also has responsibility for the full-time AS/A level programme and offers a wide range of subjects and excellent facilities for our students at the College’s Wakefield and Thornes Park Campuses. We work closely with the Academy of Culture, Media and Sport which also offers advanced level programmes, to provide around 30 different subjects at AS/A level, and to enable students on vocational courses to access AS/A level subjects as part of their programme of study. There are over 300 full-time students studying on the AS/A level programme in the Academy and the overall A level pass rate was 97.8% in 2009, a record for the College and above the National Average. The proportion of A/B grades at A level was 35% in 2009. The Programme Manager for A levels is responsible for the management of the provision in Humanities and English.
There is a good range of science & mathematics courses, including AS/A level Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics / Further Mathematics and Physics, GCSE Human Health and Physiology and GCSE Science. A BTEC National Diploma in Applied Science was successfully introduced in September 2007. Provision in Science and Mathematics also includes an intermediate course in Animal Care, which is well established and highly successful. A partnership with Askham Bryan College has enabled a significant expansion of the provision at Advanced level and provides access for students to a wide range of specialist resources. The Access to Higher Education Diploma programme caters for approximately 120 full and part-time adult students following pathways in nursing, humanities and social sciences, business and science. Students have a wide choice of subjects within each pathway, and progress onto a wide range of Higher Education courses. There is also a full-time level 2 Access to Advanced Study programme. The Programme Manager for Science and Mathematics is responsible for the management of the Access programmes.
The Travel and Tourism provision consists primarily of full-time programmes for 16-18 year olds, which are built around the First Diploma, National Certificate and National Diploma in Travel and Tourism. Students can also study additional industry qualifications, and these courses are also offered on a part-time basis. Students benefit from an extensive programme of visits and residentials, involvement in the College’s travel agency and the opportunity to undertake a work placement overseas.
The provision in Hospitality and Catering consists of various programmes including NVQ1 Multiskills, NVQ2s in Professional Cookery and Reception, NVQ3 in Professional Cookery, and BTEC National Diploma in Hospitality Supervision. The curriculum is rich in additional qualifications recognised by the Industry, including certificate and diploma courses in patisserie. Enrolments are growing, and student achievements are generally high. The training restaurant ‘Gaskells’ and an associated brasserie provide realistic work environments for our students, many of whom also gain residential and/or work experience overseas. A patisserie shop, “Petit Gaskells”, was successfully introduced in 2007.
