Wakefield College Information

Wakefield College is the only general further education college located in and serving the Wakefield Metropolitan District and adjacent communities.

Wakefield College has three large campuses; two in Wakefield and one at Glasshoughton in Castleford in the north east of the District. These three campuses cater for 16-18 year olds and adult learners, both full and part-time. Higher Education (HE) programmes are also delivered at all three campuses. The College provides a sixth-form centre specialising in A and AS levels and other advanced level and vocational programmes for school leavers from across the District, at the two Wakefield campuses. The skillsXchange at Glasshoughton specialises in Construction, Hair and Beauty, Engineering and Care programmes.

The College has close and productive links with its partner schools, and provides College-based taster and bridge programmes through a number of projects for students aged 14-16.

The College’s Services to Business team delivers bespoke training to employers in a range of generic areas such as basic skills, health and safety, and management, as well as in specific skills, for example, engineering, construction and hospitality. The College’s Train to Gain contract and contracts for provision for the unemployed are managed by this team. In 2007, the College was successful in gaining the prestigious Training Quality Standard accreditation for its work with employers, one of only two colleges in the region to achieve this at that time. Since then we have achieved Centre of Excellence in Logistics.

In 2009/10 the College enrolled 10,763 (compared with 10,921 in 2008/09) students, of whom:

  • 77.3% (76.2%) of all students were from a Wakefield postcode
  • 91.1% (90.5%) of 16-18 year old students were from a Wakefield postcode
  • 62.4% (65.1%) were over 19 years of age
  • 6.9% (7.4%) from an ethnic minority
  • 12.2% (14.2%) were enrolled on courses at foundation and pre-foundation level
  • 34.3% (35.2%) were enrolled on courses at intermediate level
  • 34.9% (32.2%) were enrolled on courses at advanced level
  • 8.3% (7.2%) were enrolled on higher education courses

The remaining 10.3% (11.5%) were enrolled on a variety of courses listed under Section 98 of the Funding Guidance 2009/10.

At 14 July 2010, the College employed 717 staff/546 FTE.
