New course is backed by local creative industries

An exciting new course has received the seal of approval from the region’s digital and creative industries. The Level 3 Creative and Digital Industries diploma, to be delivered by Wakefield College, will prepare school leavers for a career in the creative, digital and IT (CDIT) sectors.

The region’s newest Sixth Form was officially opened by England Rugby Union Head Coach Stuart Lancaster this week. Crofton Sixth Form, a pioneering partnership between Wakefield College and Crofton Academy welcomed a host of local dignitaries, school heads and other VIPs as the ribbon was cut to welcome new students at the start of the new academic year.

A Level students from Wakefield College’s Sixth Form have once again shown their abilities after the class of 2014 achieved a stunning set of results. Figures revealed last night showed that the overall pass rate was over 97%; an improvement on 2013 and the 10th year in succession to exceed 95%, with almost two thirds of A levels being achieved at A* - C grades.

Wakefield College and Wakefield Weightlifting Club Hosted this year’s Championships, which saw some of the promising young talent in the country come to the fore. With the Home nations in full preparation for the Commonwealth Games, this was the last time some of the competitors would take to the platform before Glasgow 2014. For others it was a chance to become a national champion and to stake a claim to be part of future major championships.

College volunteers tackle homelessness and promote healthy eating

Volunteers on the vInspired Talent Programme at Wakefield College are currently undertaking social action projects to help make a difference to the community they live in. The young people, aged 16-24, have split into two groups, one to promote healthy living through creating a community vegetable patch at City Campus and the other to help homeless people in the district.

The annual event, which took place at the College’s Castleford Campus, saw the region’s best young beauty therapy students from across the north of England showcasing their talents and hoping to impress industry judges.

This year’s final saw learners from Crofton Academy, St Thomas a Becket School, Hemsworth Academy, Thornhill Community Academy and Westborough High School taking part.

Learna Kenney, 35, from Wakefield College has transformed her life by returning to education achieving Level 2 Functional Skills in English and Maths, and is now working towards an apprenticeship in Healthcare. Her remarkable learning achievements are being recognised with a Learning Life Skills Apprentice Award in Yorkshire & the Humber as part of Adult Learners’ Week, 14th – 20th June.
