College volunteers tackle homelessness and promote healthy eating

Volunteers on the vInspired Talent Programme at Wakefield College are currently undertaking social action projects to help make a difference to the community they live in. The young people, aged 16-24, have split into two groups, one to promote healthy living through creating a community vegetable patch at City Campus and the other to help homeless people in the district.

Beauty Therapy students from Wakefield College swept the board at the regional World Skills 2014 heats last week after picking up five awards. The annual event, which took place at the College’s Castleford Campus, saw the region’s best young beauty therapy students from across the north of England showcasing their talents and hoping to impress industry judges.

The third annual Wakefield College Schools Cookery Competition saw the region’s best young chefs come together to battle it out to be crowned School Chefs of the Year. This year’s final saw learners from Crofton Academy, St Thomas a Becket School, Hemsworth Academy, Thornhill Community Academy and Westborough High School taking part.

Learna Kenney, 35, from Wakefield College has transformed her life by returning to education achieving Level 2 Functional Skills in English and Maths, and is now working towards an apprenticeship in Healthcare. Her remarkable learning achievements are being recognised with a Learning Life Skills Apprentice Award in Yorkshire & the Humber as part of Adult Learners’ Week, 14th – 20th June.
