The official opening of a new training facility is set to provide a major economic boost to the region. The Logistics Training Centre, run by Wakefield College’s commercial training arm, Services to Business, is based at the Aire and Calder Industrial Park in Castleford.

The new Centre will provide training facilities for people working within or wishing to work within the fork lift and warehousing industries. Some of the areas covered by the training will include mechanical handling, equipment, logistics, health and safety and operations management. Individuals will also be given hands on experience of operating fork-lifts, cherry and reach pickers too.

Services to Business Manager, Kate Dyson, said: “The initial interest shown by companies and individuals in the Centre has been incredible, and the Open Event is a great chance for businesses in the area to come and look at the facilities we have on offer. The Centre will provide courses and training for both employers and individuals who need to progress their skill base. West Yorkshire has one of the worst records in the country for fork-lift truck accidents, and by opening this Centre we are responding directly to the needs of our customers and helping to develop a skilled, competent and safe workforce.”

The new Centre will also benefit individuals who have been unemployed and claiming Job Seekers Allowance for over six months. The College has been working in partnership with Job Centre Plus to provide free training in areas such as Customer Service, Care, Warehousing, IT, Retail and Security.

The College’s commercial training arm, Services to Business, is already an accredited ITTSAR (Independent Training Standards Scheme and Register) training provider and proud holder of the Training Quality Standards (TQS) Award with excellence in the field of Freight, Logistics and Warehousing.
