Wakefield College offers a huge range of courses to suit all ages, abilities and aspirations.

Options for 16 - 19 year olds

AS/A Levels
Students joining our Sixth Form can select from a wide range of AS and A Level subjects, or advanced level diplomas, or a combination of both.

Vocational Courses
At Further Education level we offer a huge variety of vocational courses in areas such as art and design, business, childcare, construction, engineering, hair and beauty, ICT, motor vehicle, performing arts, sport and public services.

Foundation Learning (FLEX)
Young people needing help to attain their goals can choose our foundation level (FLEX) programmes which combine vocational study, personal and social development, English, Maths and IT, or can study on our GCSE re-sit programme.

Apprenticeships
We also offer a range of apprenticeship programmes for those who have found employment within their chosen field.

AS/A Levels

The College offers a wider range of courses than most school sixth forms can offer. Art and Design, Film and Media Studies, Graphic Communication and PE are studied at the Thornes Park Campus, otherwise students are based at the Wakefield Campus in the heart of the city

Students usually take four subjects at AS Level in Year 1 and three at A2 Level in Year 2. Entry requirements for the A Level programme are generally five GCSEs at grade A* - C.

Vocational Courses

Vocational Courses at Advanced Level
All the major vocational areas are represented either in the form of BTEC Level 3 Diplomas or the new 14-19 Advanced Diplomas.

BTEC Extended Diplomas are work related qualifications which combine a practical approach to learning and theoretical background. They are equivalent to three A Levels, attract UCAS points and can lead to Higher Education.

The 14-19 Advanced Diploma is a blend of work-related learning, Functional Skills, project work and work experience and is equivalent to 3.5 A Levels.

Vocational Courses at Level 2
We offer a wide range of one year, vocational courses at Level 2, which can be combined with GCSE re-sits if necessary. Success in one of these will enable you to progress to Advanced level courses.

Foundation Learning (FLEX)

Highly flexible programmes of study at Level 1 which give learners a taste of different vocational subjects while improving their English, Maths, ICT, personal, social and employability skills.

Apprenticeships

Provided that you can gain employment in your chosen vocational field, an apprenticeship programme will allow you to learn while you earn.

Apprenticeships are free to 16-18 year olds and can be completed at either Level 2 or Level 3. We cover all the traditional vocational areas such as plumbing, motor vehicle, engineering, carpentry and joinery and bricklaying, but also offer apprenticeships in areas such as business and administration, hairdressing and dental nursing.

Higher Education options

The University Centre Wakefield offers courses leading to HNCs, HNDs, higher level NVQs, Foundation Degrees and Honours Degrees in a variety of areas such as business and management, construction and civil engineering, early years, engineering, performing arts and teaching in the lifelong learning sector.

Our Higher Education courses are vocationally focused and many can be studied on a part-time as well as full-time basis, allowing students to work and learn at the same time and apply the knowledge gained at College to their workplace experience.

Other attractions of studying for higher level courses at Wakefield College include fees which are significantly lower than most universities, smaller class sizes and outstanding personal support. Many of our courses are validated by major regional universities, so students gain a university award while studying at the College.

HNC/HNDs

These qualifications provide the skills for particular vocational areas and can lead straight into a career or be used as a stepping-stone towards a degree. Many of them are flexibly delivered with part-time attendance on an afternoon and/or evening or one full day per week basis.

Entry to these courses is via the appropriate Level 3 qualifications, but mature candidates with industry experience may be accepted without the standard entry requirements.

HNCs and HNDs are very highly regarded by employers in some sections of industry.

Foundation Degrees

Our Foundation Degrees have been developed in collaboration with employers and combine academic study with workplace learning. They can generally be studied on a full- or part-time basis and can lead straight into a career or be topped up to a full degree. Our Foundation Degrees are awards of Leeds Metropolitan University or the University of Bradford.

BA (Hons) Top Up Degrees

These are available to people who have already achieved a Foundation Degree or HND in certain subject areas and who wish to gain a full degree. Attendance can be on a full-time or part-time basis.

Professional Qualifications

We offer a wide range of courses leading to qualifications awarded by professional bodies. These are of interest to people forging careers in the areas of business and management, purchasing and supply, logistics and supply chain management, marketing and accounting. Attendance is on a part-time basis, often during the evenings.

Higher Level NVQs

We offer some National Vocational Qualifications at Level 4, namely in Leadership and Management in Care and in Learning and Development. These are aimed at people already employed in these fields who wish to have their existing skills and knowledge accredited.

Teacher Training

We offer a range of part-time and in-service courses for those interested in or already engaged in careers as teachers or trainers within the lifelong learning sector. These are not applicable to people who wish to train to teach in schools.

Options for 19+ year olds

For adults we offer a wide variety of part-time courses which can be fitted around work or domestic commitments. These can be studied at College or in the workplace, or sometimes online or by using a distance learning package, enabling you to study where and when you like.

We offer courses for people who need help with their basic numeracy, literacy and IT skills, an Access course with several pathways for those wishing to go into Higher Education, and a whole host of courses in vocational areas such as childcare, health and social care, health and safety, first aid, logistics, dental nursing, fork lift truck, motor vehicle, construction… the list is almost endless.

Our provision for adults covers the whole span of levels from Entry Level to Higher Education, and also includes apprenticeships, which are no longer something only school-leavers can do.

Part-time courses

For adults we offer a whole host of courses which can be studied at College on a part-time basis.  These may be courses you need to gain employment, promotion or to change career, or courses for pleasure. They may involve attendance at classes at fixed times during the day or evening, or at more informal workshops.

Work Based Learning courses

Many of our courses involve little or no attendance at College because you learn in your workplace with support and guidance from a qualified Assessor who will visit you to observe you at work and help you to prepare a portfolio of evidence that you have attained the required standard.

Distance/Online Learning

We offer many courses, particularly in the field of IT, which require no attendance at College, or attendance only for induction and assessment sessions, and which are studied online with the assistance of a package of learning materials and telephone or email support from a tutor.

These courses enable you to learn where and when you like but lead to the same nationally recognised qualifications that classroom-based students achieve.

Apprenticeships

Apprenticeships are no longer purely for young people straight from school – they are now open to all age groups over the age of 16. You will need to be suitably employed, and those over 19 will have to pay a contribution towards the cost of training.

We offer training for apprentices in all the traditional fields - plumbing, carpentry and joinery, bricklaying, motor vehicle, engineering and so on - but also in areas such as business and administration, health and social care and dental nursing.

Maths, English & ESOL

These are essential skills in today’s world and if you need help to get them up to scratch our friendly and informal English, Maths and ESOL workshops are just the thing. They are run at different campuses and also in the community, and the classes are friendly, informal and allow you to work at your own speed and level.

Services to Business

Our Services to Business unit is the commercial training arm of the College. It offers employers a huge range of courses which can be tailor-made to fit their requirements.

Courses can be full-time, part-time day or evening, delivered at College or on employers’ premises, classroom-based or work-based, studied online or by distance learning. Courses can be of any length, from short courses of a few hours’ duration to apprenticeships lasting two or three years, and at any level, from Level 1 right up to Higher Education level.

The unit can advise on the appropriate training for your staff and give information about available funding, such as the Train to Gain scheme which might enable you to access free courses.

Short courses

We offer a huge number of short courses which can take from a few hours to several weeks to complete. These are delivered at College or, subject to demand, at the employer’s premises. They enable your staff to gain specific skills or knowledge in bite-sized chunks in relatively short periods of time.

Distance/Online Learning

A variety of courses are available for those who want complete flexibility as to when and where they study. Some courses are studied with the aid of workbooks and telephone/email guidance from a tutor. Others are studied online, again with the assistance of a tutor, and attendance at College is only required for induction and assessment sessions, thus involving the minimum disruption to your business.

NVQs

These are qualifications delivered in the workplace, or in some cases in settings which replicate the working environment (like the College’s training kitchen and restaurant). NVQs are based on national occupational standards, which mean students gain the skills and knowledge needed for your business. Learning takes place in the workplace, and an Assessor visits to help students prepare a portfolio of evidence that they have achieved the required competencies.

Apprenticeships

Apprenticeships are the ideal way to ensure that you gain and retain skilled employees who have been trained in a way that suits your business and with the correct balance between theoretical knowledge and practical experience.

It has been shown that offering apprenticeships to both new entrants and existing employees can greatly increase a workforce’s levels of motivation and productivity. We offer apprenticeship programmes at levels 2 and 3, and they are now available to all age ranges, making them an excellent way to retain good staff by giving them the opportunity to develop their careers without leaving your employment.

Professional Qualifications

If your business is in the field of accounting, marketing, logistics, purchasing, health and safety, business or management, we have courses which will help you to acquire professionally-qualified staff. Courses are offered at all levels, and delivery is flexible - part-time, full-time, daytime and evening options often being available.

Custom Built Courses for Business
