College students exploring international horizons

Press Release Residential Hospitality & Catering Travel & Tourism

Students at Wakefield College are reaching far flung corners of the world after Hospitality and Tourism students saw their annual residential take them to Shanghai China.

During the trip, students ascended the Oriental Pearl Tower, visited the Pudong area, the Old Town, with its amazing maze of old Chinese fashion shops and traditional tea houses, visited the 600 year old Yu Yuan Gardens, the Urban Planning Museum which has the largest 3D map in the world, Nanjing Road with its shopping extravaganza, and People's Square.

The group also visited the 2500 year old city of Suzhou where they enjoyed a boat ride on the Grand Canal and a visit to a silk factory, and at the luxurious Radisson Hotel they had lunch in the fine dining revolving restaurant, Epicure, on the 45th. They also enjoyed a guided tour of the Imperial Gardens Hotel where everybody was given the opportunity to ask questions of the general manager.

Head of Hospitality and Tourism at Wakefield College Laurent Berges said, "Students at Wakefield College are given the opportunity to undertake valuable work placements across Europe, but we also go on relevant residential visits to high profile places to illustrate best examples of career prospects, businesses and activities.

“In recent times we have developed valuable relationships with employers in New York and Toronto - such as Gordon Ramsay Holdings and Sheraton Hotels, but this year, I wanted to immerse students in a completely new culture, and everybody was very exited by the prospect of travelling to China. The outcome has been hugely satisfying. I would like to thank all students and staff who helped make this trip so great, especially the staff and students at Wakefield College very own Travel Agency, Global Travel."

Student Martyn Moore commented, "The trip was a wonderful experience as we learnt so much about China, its people and its culture."
