Wakefield College was abuzz with election fever recently after regional and national political heavyweights visited the College. The College’s Thornes Park Campus hosted a hustings event with Prospective Parliamentary Candidates from the Wakefield District whilst the Margaret Street Campus welcomed Foreign Secretary David Miliband MP.

The Question Time Event, organised by the College’s Debating Society, proved a lively affair with students from the College and other local schools grilling the election hopefuls on a number of key topics including public sector spending, law and order, foreign policy and the expenses scandal.

Students from Wakefield College were accompanied by their counterparts from Wakefield Girls’ High School, Wakefield City High, Ossett High, St Wilfreds and Cathedral High School for the debate which was chaired by Wakefield College Government and Politics lecturer, David Green.

Mary Creagh MP (Labour) was joined by Antony Calvert from the Conservatives, David Smith from the Liberal Democrats and Miriam Hawkins from the Green Party for the hour-long debate.

Meanwhile, Foreign Secretary David Miliband was on the campaign trail when he visited the College to meet local Labour supporters. Mr Miliband also spoke to international students at the College and praised the College and the work it does during his hour-long visit.

The Foreign Secretary also took questions from students explaining the role of Britain in the world and the complexities of international diplomacy.
