Wakefield College’s Rugby League students celebrate their win.

Wakefield College’s Rugby League students won the plaudits last night after a hard fought 40-28 win over Hull College in the Yorkshire Colleges Cup Final. A vocal crowd at the Lock Lane Rugby Centre, Castleford, saw a determined Wakefield team run out as worthy winners. The team now enters the quarter finals of the national tournament where they face the best college teams in the country.

Throughout the course of the match Hull failed to cope with the level of skill that Wakefield were able to produce with some outstanding performances from Ryan ‘Rhino’ Parker, Casey Canterbury and Man of the Match Ashley Haynes. Wakefield scored eight tries on the night to secure the team’s first piece of silverware this season.

Mark Helme, Athlete Development Centre Coordinator at Wakefield College, said: “The players, the coaches and the College are all extremely proud of the achievement the team have earned with this victory, and it is well deserved. The players have been working hard for the last nine months to get this opportunity and they have shown the desire not to let that slip through their fingers. The College have taken a big step in backing the athlete program we have put in place, and this success is one of the clearest indicators yet that the programme works and is a major benefit to talented young athletes in the area.

“This group of players have bought into the professional setting we have created and are now seeing that this will help them perform at a higher level. We are now turning our focus and attention to the next game, which will be equally tough and challenge the players to perform at this high level every week. Our Coaches Mick Bamford and James Ford have got the guys producing some excellent play over the course of the season we all would like to see the squad show this on the national stage.”

The team now plays Salford College in the quarter finals of the national competition on Wednesday 30 March.
