Gaskell’s Restaurant, Wakefield College’s training restaurant, has been named the best restaurant in Wakefield by the Civic Society for the second year running at a glitzy awards ceremony that took place at Bishopgarth last week. The College were joint winners of the award with Red Chilli based in Kirkgate, Wakefield.

Laurent Berges, Head of Hospitality, Catering, Horticulture and Animal Care at Wakefield College, said: “This award is a tremendous honour for us. It is unheard of for a College’s training restaurant to be named best restaurant in a specific area. This is a testimony to our fantastic teachers and students at the College. We train hospitality and catering students to the highest industry standards, and the feedback from our customers is overwhelmingly positive.”

Members of the Civic Society’s Dining Club, which was introduced in 2010, sampled a different restaurant each month from January through to December 2011 and chose the winning restaurants by rating each establishment they ate at.

Members voted on the overall experience at each restaurant in terms of ambience and comfort, quality of the food and service and value for money. The votes for the top place were so close that club members decided both Gaskell’s and Red Chilli should be declared their Restaurant of the Year 2011.

Society President, Kevin Trickett, said: “We established our Dining Club in 2010 to provide our members with an opportunity meet socially and, while doing so, to check out the quality of the many different restaurants that can now be found in and around the city centre. This helps the Society to establish a relationship with local businesses and also helps us to better understand the choice of eating place available in and around the city so that we can make recommendations not only to our members but also to visitors to Wakefield.

“By asking our Dining Club members to score their experience of each restaurant they have tried, we are building up a good picture of the best places to eat in Wakefield. In 2011, we visited 12 different establishments. The two restaurants we are recognising at our AGM scored the highest marks based on what our members experienced on the evening we visited them and I congratulate Red Chilli and Gaskell’s on their Restaurant of the Year awards.”
