Press Release Hospitality & Catering Famous Visitor

L to R - Emily Briggs, Scott Bloomfield , Ed Balls, Nicola Grocock and Marie Speak.

Outwood and Morley MP Ed Balls visited Wakefield College recently where he had the opportunity to speak with senior College staff and also to try his hand at bread making with a group of talented catering students.

The Shadow Chancellor spoke at length with College Principal Sam Wright about some of the work the College is undertaking to help young people and adults in the District.

Catering students from the College’s award winning Gaskell’s Restaurant prepared a lunch for the MP and invited him into their kitchens where Ed donned an apron to have a go at making some bread.

Ed also caught up with a group of students he met last year to check on their progress and to ascertain how EMA funding cuts had affected them.

Commenting on the visit, student Scott Bloomfield said: “It is important that local political leaders find out about issues that affect young people and we were pleased to welcome Ed back to the College. We spoke to him about how our courses are currently going and also about our hopes for the future in terms of jobs and university and how difficult the current climate is.”

Ed commented: “What a great group of students at Wakefield College. I was at the College at the start of the academic year and it was good to catch up with some of them again to hear how they’ve been getting along. The catering students have been away on placements around the world honing their skills. I met up with the newly elected President of the Student Union too who shared her plans for the next year. The food at Gaskell’s was amazing too and it was good to get into the kitchens to see the frontline for myself. I’ll definitely be back.”
