College student hoping to be a cut above the rest

Press Release Hair & Beauty Student Achievement

A talented hairdressing student from Wakefield College has beaten off stiff competition and secured a place in the UK regional finals of the WorldSkills advanced hairdressing competition.

Amy McMaster, 28, who is studying on a Level 3 hairdressing course at the College’s skillsXchange campus, will travel to St. Helens College next week where she will pit her skills against the best hairdressers in the north of England.

WorldSkills International promotes vocational training and education in areas such as fashion technology, IT, construction, hairdressing and beauty therapy. It aims to reward talent and drive up levels of expertise in various trades through competitions which adhere to tough international standards. Winners of the national competition will be shortlisted for the UK team which heads to Leipzig in Germany in July 2013 for WorldSkills International where the cream of international talent compete against each other to be crowned the best in the world.

This year’s Advanced Hairdressing competition attracted over 300 entrants from across England, Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales. Winners from the regional finals will then be invited to the national finals that take place at the NEC in Birmingham in November.

Commenting on her experiences, Amy said: “I have a real passion for hairdressing and it’s something I really enjoy doing, so when the opportunity to enter this competition came up I decided to submit an entry. I was excited and nervous when I found out I got through but thankfully the judges were impressed with my work and I’m now looking forward to the next round.”

Hairdressing lecturer, Janet Everall added: “We were really excited Amy got through into the next round. She is one of the best students to represent the College as she’s always very enthusiastic and extremely creative. Whatever she does she always gives it 100%.”
