School children set for their first ‘Graduation’

CU Graduation Press Release Children’s University

Children from across the Wakefield District, some as young as five, will don caps and gowns this week as they take part in the first ever Wakefield Children’s University (CU) Graduation Ceremony on Wednesday 26 June in the grand surroundings of Wakefield Theatre Royal.

Children’s University, which is spearheaded by Wakefield College, is aimed to encourage children to develop a love of learning beyond the classroom. Children collected stamps for each hour of learning they completed either in after-school activities or at one of the many affiliated Learning Destinations (such as Wakefield Theatre Royal, The Hepworth Gallery, Wakefield Wildcats and Wakefield One) across the region.

James Pennington, Wakefield CU Manager, said, “We are delighted to be holding our first CU Graduation Ceremony and recognising the efforts and achievements of our young members. We’ve been established for just over a year now and the support we’ve received from schools, Learning Destinations and parents has been fantastic.

“But above all, Children’s University is all about the children: participating in activities, having new experiences and learning new skills outside the conventional school hours. It is proven that being involved with Children’s University equips them with a thirst for knowledge and learning and also helps their attendance and achievement at school.”

Children receive a bronze certificate for 30 hours, silver for 65 hours and gold for 100 hours. They will be joined by parents, teachers and CU patrons including Sir Rodney Walker, Councillor Peter Box and local entrepreneur, Adeem Younis, at the Graduation ceremony.
