Extravaganza of Music, Dance and Theatre set for new performance centre

Press Release Performing Arts Music Summer Show Upload Festival

Students from Wakefield College are promising a spectacular festival of music, dance and theatre to celebrate the opening of the new refurbished Mechanics’ Theatre on Wood Street, Wakefield as it opens its’ doors to the public next week following a £1 million refurbishment.

The former Wakefield Museum site, which was acquired by the College last year, will now become home to the College’s Performing Arts Department and will this year host the annual Festival of Music, Dance and Theatre – a two-week festival of performances by the College’s music and performing arts students.

Amongst the highlights this year there is a mix of theatre including the magical tale of misdirected love in Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Two bonkers contemporary pieces; All in The Timing by David Ives is an existential romp through ideas that theatre takes for granted and Berkoff’s Dahling You Were Marvellous, is a hilarious and biting homage to the world of theatre luvvies. We then travel thousands of miles to the vibrant and colourful land of India in an original show that tells the myths and legends of this hot and sultry country in Stories of Splendour.

Marie Dalton, Programme Area Manager for Music and Performing Arts said: “All the students are looking forward to moving to the new venue and putting on some great performances. We have more to celebrate this year as the festival marks the opening of the Mechanics' Theatre and the Mechanics’ Performing Arts Studios. The City Museum has been transformed and will see the students and local community benefitting from industry standard facilities in a city centre location.”

The Mechanics’ Theatre will be hosting an opening event on Friday 7th June at 1pm where members of the media are invited for a guided tour of the venue followed by a performance of ‘Godspell’ one of the biggest Broadway successes of all time, which opens the 2013 Festival of Dance, Music and Theatre.
